Celebrate Spring! 2010 Special Exhibit

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

There are always at least two or three special quilt exhibits at Quilt Market, but I am usually so busy that I don’t take time to take in the show. I was particularly drawn to a couple of the quilts in the Celebrate Spring! 2010 exhibit presented by the International Quilt Association, so I snapped some photos to share with you. The theme was season of renewal and there was a wide array of interpretations on display…these were my favorites:

One More Day…

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

Tomorrow is the last day of Spring Quilt Market…I hate to see it end, but in a way I’m really glad, too, because I am soooo tired! A fun girlfriend day is planned for Monday and then I head for home bright and early Tuesday morning. Today was another very long day beginning with a business lecture at 8AM, full day on the Market floor, and a fun class tonight.  Another early morning lecture tomorrow so this will be quick…enjoy.

IMG_0731 Bunny Hill Designs booth…so stinking cute you wouldn’t believe it! Watch for the complete Lily and Will fabric collection at SHQC in October!

IMG_0740 Pieces from My Heart booth featuring the new Lollipop collection from Sandy Gervais…coming to SHQC in October!

IMG_0743 Collections for a Cause-Hope by Howard Marcus for Moda. The top of the picture is the actual 1840’s antique quilt that inspired the fabric collection…it was amazing at how true the prints were – old compare to new! Sales of this fabric collection will benefit ALS.  Watch for it at SHQC in September!

IMG_0747 Crazy quilting anyone? We’ll soon have yummy new wools, silks and linens perfect for creating your own heirloom.

IMG_0751 Fun display at the United Notions/Moda booth!

IMG_0756 Moda Home was under the Big Top!

I took a fun class tonight – Surface Design using fabric paints and inks – way outside my comfort zone! It was reminiscent of fingerpainting in kindergarten…loads of fun!

IMG_0768 IMG_0774

These were the “professional” samples…

IMG_0777 And here we were working hard at being creative…that’s Carol beside me in the red…my “work” is at the very bottom of the picture, see my blue butterfly? It was a proud moment!

IMG_0782 Carol is hard at work, and Joyce caught me wiping my hands on my apron! It was very messy and I was trying to get the paint off my hands…good thing they gave us aprons to wear!

And the shopping begins in earnest…

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

Another 8AM lecture this morning, then a brief respite to grab a much-needed cup of joe before I hit the Market floor! I worked my “agenda” first thing and got the must-haves out of the way first. Only problem with that approach is that my hands were FULL within about 10 minutes of the doors opening so I had to go in search of the baggage check room! No pictures of the loot, but I cannot wait to show you…fun new samples, kits and patterns!

There are 32 veeerrryyy long aisles of vendors and I made it through about half today. Some I’ll revisit tomorrow (no impulse buys at Market!!!) and there were others that didn’t make the cut…can’t buy it all, as much as I’d love to!!!

I was far too busy shopping to take many pictures today, but there were a few things that caught my eye…

IMG_0711 IMG_0710

Delicate displays in the Anna Griffin booth…

IMG_0713 Michael Miller Fabrics never disappoints…their booth area was a wonderland of white…

IMG_0715 Cute, cute nursery display featuring cuddly soft plush from Shannon/Robert Kaufman.

IMG_0726 Fun, quirky display in the Handbehg Felts booth.

Tomorrow it is back to finish up all the aisles I didn’t get to today, along with a couple of appointments to buy some FABRIC! I’ve found some terrific new fabric suppliers that I think you’re going to love, love, love…

Ended a busy day with dinner at Stella’s Fish Cafe with a c-r-a-z-y bunch! Good food and good friends…nothing better!

Market Schoolhouse & Sample Spree

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

I’m a day late with this post, but let me just say that it is proving very difficult to find the time and energy to write a post every day. The days begin with business classes/lectures at 8AM  and it has been after 11PM each night before I get back to the hotel room…aahhhh, but it is so much fun!

Market Thursday was Schoolhouse day, and it is truly exhausting. I didn’t count the number of sessions, but I would venture to say there are between 150 and 200 sessions from which to choose, every half hour. The schedule is made available one hour before the opening session, and then you must be prepared to move rapidly from one session to the next. The problem is that there are so many good sessions and it is difficult to choose between those that overlap; often the decision is made for you…some sessions are so popular you can’t even get in the door! The sessions range from presentations of new product, to business sessions, to ideas for marketing the products we buy, displays, etc. There is so much information to absorb and you want to take advantage of all of it…after all, that is a really big part of what Quilt Market is all about for a shop owner.

IMG_0676 Here Celine Perkins of Perkins Dry Goods introduces a new block of the month program from her new book, Abundance.

IMG_0678 A product display idea from Timeless Treasures featuring the new Tonga Treats pre-cut strips and squares (look for these at SHQC soon…hint, hint!)

IMG_0697 Karen Montgomery, owner of The Quilt Company and fabric designer for Timeless Treasures, shows samples made with her new fabric line, Lauren.

After a full day of Schoolhouse, and a leisurely dinner back at the hotel, it was back to the convention center for the maddening frenzy known as Sample Spree, which is the suppliers’ opportunity to unveil their new introductions and offer Market Specials to shopowners. Many designers also offer pre-made models for their new designs, which gives shopowners a head start for being able to introduce the new products into their shops quickly without having to wait for a model to be made once they return from Market. People began lining up to get in at 4:30PM and it didn’t begin until 8PM!!! We (Julie, Noel and I) waited until the initial frenzied surge had ended before we went over, and we were able to walk right in without a wait!

IMG_0706 Every year Moda has a new Market bag at Sample Spree…and I filled TWO of these with yummy stuff to bring back. So what did I buy?

IMG_0704 Just look at all that Moda goodness! Just a sneak peek, though. You’ll have to wait for the Market Review Party when I get back to see it all up close and personal…SORRY!

Play Date

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

 no sleep

I’m a fairly frugal person, when I want to be, and a cheap flight to Minneapolis was definitely in order for this trip. Even when I realized it was a 5:30AM flight, I wasn’t deterred. In fact, it seemed perfect for me since I’m generally up at that time of day anyway. What I failed to take into account was that I’d have to be at the airport an hour early and in order to do that I had to leave my house by 3:00AM, which meant getting up at 2:00AM.  H.E.L.L.O.!!! What was I thinking???

My motto that “sleep is overrated” was definitely in play yesterday morning on the first leg of my trip to Spring Quilt Market in Minneapolis. Ironically it wasn’t the loss of sleep that bothered me the most…I didn’t realize that there would be NO services available at the airport at 4AM! No Starbucks (luckily I had grabbed a Diet Coke when I left home!) and no tram! What makes anyone think that early morning travelers are any more prepared to walk 5 miles than travelers during normal hours? I walked 25 minutes (!) from the check-in kiosk to my departure gate, hauling a tote bag and carry-on, huffing and puffing the entire time. I am too fat and too out-of-shape for that kind of exercise, especially at 4AM!!!

IMG_0665 Here’s the view from my seat on the airplane when I woke after a brief nap. The sun was just barely coming up and the clouds below us looked like marshmallow fluff…so pretty.

I came to Minneapolis a day early so that I could hang out in White Bear Lake with my friend Roseann at her cute little shop. She was having a busy day with the bus tour of quilt shop owners coming through at intervals, but we managed to sneak away for a bite of lunch and a little catch up time. White Bear Lake is the cutest little town you can imagine…if I ever just disappear with no warning…look for me here!

IMG_0671 IMG_0672

I managed a brief nap back at the hotel, and then met up with Julie and Noel for dinner. We walked down the street (did I mention the weather in Minneapolis is very close to perfect these days??) to Hell’s Kitchen, which has been touted as a “must do” while in Minneapolis. We were not disappointed. The atmosphere was unique and fun, and the food was wonderful! This is the chandelier that greets you when you walk into the restaurant…

IMG_0675

…it was almost scary to walk under with all those knives hanging down! Back at the hotel for a night cap (or two!) and visiting with more friends…old and new…one of my favorite things about coming to Market…the friends, not the night caps!!!

Today is lectures and Schoolhouse followed by Sample Spree tonight. This is always one of the most intense days of Market, as the designers and sponsoring companies put on their individual schoolhouse events showcasing their new products, ideas and programs. There is a wealth of information for shop owners to use to make buying decisions and ideas that can be used back at home in the quilt shops. It will be non-stop from one event to another beginning in about 20 minutes until Sample Spree ends at 10PM tonight. I’d better get to it…

To Market, To Market…

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

gone-shopping-sign I’m off to one of my favorite cities…Minneapolis…for Spring Quilt Market. I’m looking forward to catching up with friends and seeing all of the new fabrics, books patterns and notions that will hit the market in the next few weeks and months. I’ve got a wish list a mile long so it will be fun seeing how much of it I can find.

I’ll be blogging while I’m there so come back here to see what I’m up to…it won’t be all work and no play, I assure you! Notice the PamKittyMorning radio over on the sidebar? Click on it and you can read lots of market reports from different shop owners and designers – it will be almost like being there in person!

Be sure to drop by the shop if you get a chance…I’m counting on all of you to keep Mike and the girls busy and out of trouble while I’m gone!

Hot off the presses…

Friday, May 29th, 2009

…and now in stock at Sweet Home Quilt Co! We’re starting to receive some of the books and patterns I ordered at Spring Market, and I am so inspired I can hardly stand it! I just want to lock myself away and sew, sew, sew!  Take a look at some of these terrific projects – - -

bk_layerjrcharm

If you were a fan of the Jelly Roll Quilts book by Pam and Nicky Lintott, you’re going to love their latest release, which features 17 projects ingeniously designed to use pre-cut fabric collections with little or no waste. If you’ve been stockpiling layer cakes, jelly rolls or 5″ charms, GET THIS BOOK and start using them up!

bk_geeserosegdnNew from Kansas City Star, Geese in the Rose Garden is perfect for those of you who love applique. Beautifully illustrated, projects combine applique and piecing.

bk_simplecomforts-tn

Kim Diehl does it again with Simple Comforts, which includes 12 lap quilt projects. I think this is her 4th or 5th book and I love each and every one of them – - this one is no exception! I wish I had time to make every project in the book!

bk_whimsyland-tn

Remember how ga-ga I was over these girls’ booth at Market? Well, their book is just as fun and cute, filled with perfect projects to appeal to the tweens and teens, and the adults, too! Another winner that has inspired me to get busy!

bk_wintergraphix-tn

I showed you the Wintergraphix fabric collection in my last post, but I forgot to show the project book, which has six projects featuring the Wintergraphix fabric. I’m dying to make the tree skirt, and then I think Holiday Harlequin or maybe Globes should be next – - – I want to do them all!

myoldbrownshoe-tn

I’m not sure if it was the name of this pattern or the actual quilt sample that sold me, but I think this is such a versatile design. The cover quilt, done up in all brown tones of Civil War reproductions, just reached out and grabbed me!  BUT I also can picture this in batiks or brights or pastels or our new Stonehenge blenders. I can’t wait to start experimenting with this pattern and it is so simple! The small squares? Raw edge applique – how simple is that!!! Hey, what about flannels – a new twist on the rag quilt craze without that dreaded clipping!

ladymadonna-tn

Here’s another fun one from the girls at Abbey Lane Quilts. You know I’m a sucker for anything black and white, and these days add green to it and I’m definately done for! Again, the green floral and leaf motif – raw edge applique.  We’ve got a terrific selection of black and white fabrics that will be perfect for this quilt!

chanceflurries-tn

Last one for today – A Chance of Flurries from Kansas Troubles Quilters. Takes one jelly roll and 3 fabrics; don’t want to do the applique – no sweat. Just omit it and do some fancy quilting in the center strips.  Did I mention the new Kansas Winter fabric line arrived, too?  That means we’ll have a limited number of kits available for this one very soon! Get started making this now and you’ll be finished in plenty of time for winter snuggling under this one!

All I can say is, it’s good to be me these days! Love, love, love opening those boxes and being reminded of the yumminess I bought at Market!  Come see for yourself!

Quilt Show at Spring Quilt Market

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

I promised to share the photos of the Quilt Show that I took while at Spring Quilt Market, and I’ve been fiddling around for the last few days trying to add captions and other “fun” stuff…I’m crying U.N.C.L.E. at this point! I’ve wasted too much valuable time already, so I’m just going to post them here until WordPress says “No More!”  I apologize in advance for the ugly poles and improvised roping (aka tape!) in some of the photos. I tried Photoshopping it out, but it just took too much time.

ENJOY!

Quilt Market Recap

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

quilt-market-09-pinOK, so I think I’m mostly recovered from the Quilt Market experience – amazing what a good night’s sleep in your own bed can do! Although this market was probably the smallest I’ve attended in terms of the number of vendors and attendees, it was still filled with loads of new patterns, fabrics and other quilty must-haves! I’ll be sharing many new fall collections over the next few months, as well as new books and patterns that I purchased. Some of our favorite designers had new things to share, including local favorite Silver Thimble Quilt Co., Miss Rosie’s, Abbey Lane Quilts, Minick & Simpson, and Fig Tree Quilts. There were loads more, far too many to mention here! You’ll be seeing some of them show up soon at Sweet Home Quilt Co., though, I promise!

Trends? I noticed lots of texture and embellishments – hand embroidery, specialty threads, wool, pin-tucks, rick rack and ruffles, and fabric textures like satin and linen blends were hot, too.  Fabric collections seemed to be really bright and funky or reproduction-type lines, not much in between. Purses/bags/totes were in abundance and children’s clothing was every where! I even noticed a number of booths featuring floor cloths and quilts as rugs – definately home dec is a trend that is here to stay.

I didn’t get as many pictures as I usually do because my camera battery died out pretty early, but I did manage a few booth shots as well as some from the actual quilts on display which I’ll share in another post.  Trust me when I say that the techno-gods were not kind to me during this Quilt Market, but I persevered!

convctr_hotel-1

This is a view of the Convention Center from the parking lot of my hotel. I was really lucky to get a room at the Hampton Inn, which was only a block from the show. I walked to and from every day, except Friday night after Sample Spree when Karen and her hubby, Ken, insisted that I let them drive me back to the hotel.  It was only a block, but it was nearly 10PM so common sense overruled! It is great to have good friends watching your back, especially when I have a tendency to be stubborn about stuff like that!

view-from-hotel-room

This is the view from my hotel room. If you know me well, you know that I am afraid of water(!) so this is as close as I wanted to get. If I remember my geography correctly, there are three rivers that come together in Pittsburgh – the Allegheny, the Monongahela, and the Ohio – someone correct me if I’m wrong! There were several cruises during Market, including one sponsored by Moda, but I didn’t go anywhere near them!

The actual Market was on the second floor of the convention center, with classrooms on the third floor. The two wings of the center are connected by a glass-enclosed walkway allowing a birdseye view of the many vendor booths.  These next photos will give you an idea of the enormity of the market floor and the many, many vendor booths! It is no wonder we were all exhausted!

Remember I mentioned Sample Spree on Friday night? I don’t usually participate because in addition to being afraid of water, I also don’t handle extreme crowds very well – I’m prone to panic attacks. I always purchase a Sample Spree ticket just in case I might work up the nerve to go, though, and this time I decided to check it out. I’ve renamed this event “Sample Free-For-All” because it was a ZOO! At this event, many of the vendors offer “samples” of their new offerings, meaning that you can buy just one of a book, pattern, fabric bundle, kit, etc. and sometimes even an actual pre-made sample to use as a store display without having to place a minimum order. Moda is always the largest draw in the room, and this time was no exception! I know there were people 10 and 15 deep at the Moda tables – I didn’t even bother! There is no jelly roll or fat quarter bundle worth the pushing and shoving and grabbing that was going on! I did manage to snag a couple of fat quarter bundles from Lecien, a Japanese fabric manufacturer, along with some wool and several new books and patterns that I had on my list.  I was only in the room for about 30 minutes, and that was pretty much my limit.

booth_buttermilkbasin
One of my favorite booths, which I kept returning to over and over, was Buttermilk Basin - total yummy eye candy every where you looked!  And really terrific display ideas, too.
booth_maywoodstudio
Maywood Studios had a really bright and cheerful booth display, too.  You can’t help but fall in love with these fun designs – you know I love black with anything!
booth_lizziebcreativeThe LizzieBCre8ive booth won the Creativity Award for the second time in a row. These girls are so much fun, and their booth certainly reflects that, too. They baked dozens and dozens of chocolate chip cookies (in their hotel room!!)  for us to sample at their booth. They were promoting their new book, Whimsyland, which has the recipe included. See what I mean about creative!
There’s lots more to share with you, but I’m out of time and out of space on this post!  Watch for my next post where I’ll share photos from the quilt show that was on display during Market. As always, Quilt Market is inspiring and exhausting and fun – one of the best things I get to do as a quilt shop owner!  I’m glad to be home, though – it’s always good to come home.

Quilt Market

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

I know I promised to post pics from Market, but like a dummy, I went off without my camera cord so can’t download any of the photos I’ve taken! I will post as soon as I get home on Monday, though.

It is the end of day two of Spring Quilt Market and I am exhausted! I spent all of Day One “tire kickin” as Pat says. (Pat has posted some great photos on her blog – obviously she didn’t forget her camera cord!!!) There is just so much to see and take in, and I have learned that I really must see it all at least once, and generally two times, before I start making buying decisions. Lots of homework to peruse all the literature I picked up!

Day Two was more “tire kickin” and “some” buying! I found some great new things that I’m anxious to show you. I stayed pretty true to form, if that tells you anything!

I’ve also attended several seminars each day, geared to quilt shop owners. Some were good, and some not so good.  This is a big reason I attend Quilt Market – the educational seminars are generally well worth the price of admission!

Tomorrow will be a short day on the Market floor for me as my shuttle to the airport will arrive at the hotel about 1PM. I have a 2-hour seminar with Pepper Cory first thing, then a little more time to see a few last minute vendors. I hope to get more photos to share, but it depends on the crowds – no point taking photos if you can’t see for the people, right?

More to come on Monday…
